Polls and the Status Quo
Heading in to the election tonight, here is a brief summary of the positions of the various parties in the lower house prior to the election:
House of Representatives:
LDP 296 seats
DPJ 113 seats
NKP 31 seats
JCP 9 seats
SDP 7 seats
PNP 4 seats
NPN 1 seat
NPD 1 seat
After the 2007 Upper House election, the DPJ hold 109 of the 242 seats, 6 more than the coalition of the LDP (83) and NKP (20).
In the lead-up to this election, the polls have been showing a large swing to the DPJ, and victory seems almost certain. The biggest question seems to be how much strength will the LDP lose…
Opinion Polls:
The JNN Poll taken of 1200 adults over August 8 and 9 showed the DPJ with a 12 point lead, 40% to 28% over the LDP, with 11% still undecided.
A TV Asahi poll of 1000 adults on August 22 and 23 showed a similar result, with 38.3% saying they would vote DPJ, and 23.6 for the LDP, although here as many as 25.5% were still undecided or did not respond.
