Honda Developing Personal Mobility Unicycle
Honda are developing a new ‘personal mobility device’, which looks like a unicycle, yet maintains stability internally and moves by leaning your weight in the direction you wish to go – similar to the Segway.
Honda says that the device is still in development, and there are not yet any firm plans for when it will go on sale, or how it will be priced. It is particularly designed for use by the elderly, which is a market that is going to continue to grow in the coming decades. By allowing the ‘rider’ to sit on the device, and maintaining its own balance, the device may be more practical than some similar devices that require the rider to stand up. But it is still unclear if the elderly will have the strength and coordination to operate it.
The ‘unicycle’ is known as the U3-X, where the ‘U’ stands for both ‘unicycle’ and ‘universal’. The device is still in proposal form, but could be a great way to zip around, with speeds of up to 6 kph. In other words, slightly faster than an average walk… I’m just trying to imagine the streets of Shibuya filled with people zipping around on these things…..That would be a sight…
