“Naruto” Manga Series 6th in Yahoo’s Top 10 Searches of 2009
Yahoo has released a list of its top 10 searched stories for 2009, and Japanese manga series Naruto comes in at number 6, thanks to its massive surge in worldwide popularity. Manga and anime have been a rising force overseas for a long time, and over the last year the Naruto series and related searches for products etc. was red hot.
According to Wikipedia, Naruto is ‘an ongoing Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Masashi Kishimoto. The plot tells the story of Naruto Uzumaki, an adolescent ninja who constantly searches for recognition and aspires to become a Hokage, the ninja in his village that is acknowledged as the leader and the strongest of all’. It was first published in 1999 by Shueisha, and has released 47 volumes so far. The manga has also been spun off into two tv series, with more than 350 episodes, as well as 6 movies.
Top of the list was Michael Jackson, with a massive surge in interest following his death earlier in the year. He knocked Britney Spears off the top of the list. She had been on top of this list for the previous four years… Also knocked off his perch from the previous year (and out of the top 10) was Barack Obama.
It seems that the list published by Yahoo is not actually a list of the ‘most searched terms’, but rather it apears to be an editorialized list of topics that garnered the most interest over the year.
