End of an Era for Hatoyama… Kuruo….
Shortly after the election of Hatoyama Yukio as Prime Minister in August of last year, I reported here on the rise of obscure comedian Hatoyama Kuruo, who had a striking resemblance to the Prime Minister. After 17 years in the wilderness, he gained some popularity after being encouraged by Beat Takeshi to put on a suit and play the more famous Hatoyama.
While impersonators of famous Presidents in the US may be able to bank on 4, 8, or even decades long job offers, playing a Japanese Prime Minister is fraught with danger, given their penchant for resigning so quickly, and being largely forgotten thereafter. Now, the comedian who saw his phone ringing off the hook just months ago, finds himself basically out of a job…
“I am so thankful that I was able to get so much work simply because I looked like Mr Hatoyama,” said the comedian, whose real name is Ken Tsurumi. “It’s too bad that I have nothing else to set me apart.”
Yes, too bad indeed…
