The Atlantic: China Wary of Japan’s New, Pro-U.S. Prime Minister

While Premier Wen Jiabao and the Chinese Foreign Ministry have offered up short congratulatory statements to the new prime minister, most Chinese commentary has ranged from bleak to belligerent. Chinese analysts point out that the prime minister has not renounced his comments to the effect that Class-A Japanese wartime leaders should no longer be considered criminals nor has he committed not to visit the Yasukuni Shrine. He also has made reference to China’s rising nationalism and naval activities as posing a risk to regional stability. To top it all off, the new prime minister has been a strong supporter of the U.S.-Japan defense alliance.

Washington Post: Japan whistle-blower wins damages in high court reversal of lower court decision

The still fledgling protection for whistle-blowers in Japan received a boost Wednesday by a high court that reversed an earlier decision and awarded damages to a worker who suffered retaliation through a transfer.
The Tokyo High Court ordered Japanese camera and precision-equipment maker Olympus Corp. to pay 2.2 million yen ($29,000) to Masaharu Hamada for transferring him from a sales division where he had a strong work record to a more solitary assignment.

Home Media Magazine: Hulu Bows Subscription Service in Japan

Hulu Sept. 1 formally launched its subscription-based video-on-demand service in Japan (www.hulu.jp) — the first international footprint for the online repurposed TV show and movie platform co-owned by The Walt Disney Co., News Corp. and NBC Universal.
Programming, which includes feature films like Pirates of the Caribbean, Armageddon, Men in Black, Troy and As Good As It Gets; and episodes from previous seasons of “24,” “Bones,” “Criminal Minds,” “Desperate Housewives,” “Fringe,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Gossip Girl,” “Heroes,” “Lost,” “NCIS,” “Private Practice” “Prison Break” and “Ugly Betty,” among others, will cost 1,480 yen monthly ($19.20).

Wall Street Journal: JET Calls in Favors in Tohoku
